Pack 9 December News

Greetings,

You are the future of Holy Cross Pack 9 Cub Scouts and there are many opportunities for you to step up and volunteer.
We are always looking for new leaders: If you have an interest in Pack 9 leadership please contact me to learn more about upcoming BSA Training activities.  Pack 9 leaders will guide you and the Pack will fund your training opportunities.
Can't do it all but want to lead one monthly event? That's fine also, contact me to learn more.

Also, we are updating the phone list for Pack 9 Cub Scouts.  Please send me an email with your current phone number(s) for Pack 9 records.
Note:  The information will not be shared publicly, thank you.

Monthly event:
Come join us in the Holy Cross Parish Center on Sunday December 3 for the Arrow of Light Ceremony.  The Troop 9 Crossover ceremony will follow after the Arrow of Light.
Please try to arrive at noon so we can be seated and begin at 12:15.

"The highest rank & award in Cub Scouting is the Arrow of Light. It is one of the few Cub Scout badges that you can wear on your Boy Scout uniform. A Webelos Scout will work on outdoor skills, physically fitness, and learn more about citizenship and working with others. Upon completion of the requirements for Arrow of Light, a Scout can bridge into a Boy Scout troop."

Hope to see you there and remember to always "Do Your Best",

John

November News

Greetings Pack 9,

I hope that you had fun if you attended the Smilin Pumpkin event at Camp Drake last month.
The Camp Drake Service Day is Saturday, November 11th from 9:00am-3:00pm. Prairielands Council is asking for both youth and adult volunteers to help prepare Camp Drake for winter guests.  The day is planned to begin at 9:00am at the Tin Shed, pizza is on the menu for lunch at the Dining Hall, and will finish at 3:00pm.  If you can (only come out for part of the day), rsvp, arrive to camp, check in and get assigned to a crew to help split firewood and/or clear brush from the trails around the campsites.

Please RSVP to Allesandro Bellina if you can attend the Camp Drake Service Day by Friday, November 10 (abellina@gmail.com).

Also, prizes have been ordered for selling popcorn, be on the lookout for an email from the Kernel regarding a time and date for the Prize Party!
Take a look at the other happenings in the news letter.
Pack 9 is making a difference!

Yours in scouting,

John

Boneyard Cleanup & Pizza: Saturday, Nov 4

Hello scout families!

I just wanted to send out a quick reminder about the Boneyard cleanup pizza party that Pack 9 will be taking part in.  We will be working up our appetites for 2 hours from 10-12 by picking up trash in public spaces around the Boneyard creek.  After that, pizza will be served!

While I know that there are several families planning on attending, I have not gotten many confirmations through email, so I thought I would formalize the process a bit to get a better idea on numbers (so that I can register our group with the city.)

If you are planning on participating in the America Recycles Day project, please take a minute and fill out the survey linked here. Please sign up by this Friday if possible so I can know a better idea of how many of us will be showing up so I can register Pack 9 with the city.  You do not need to sign yourself up with the city.

I look forward to seeing you all there!

TL:DR version:  Sign Up Here for America Recycles Day Cleanup Project by this Friday (10/27).  Pizza Will Be Served!

Upcoming Cub Scout Events

Greetings Pack 9 families and friends, a big hand 🖐 goes out to Jacelyn Hemmelgarn for organizing the Camporee at Memorial Stadium! Thank you!

I wanted to send a note reminding everyone about the Prairielands Council and Pack 9 upcoming events:

  • Sunday October 29-Smilin Pumpkin Outdoor Festival
  • Saturday November 4-America Recycles Service Project
  • Sunday November 5-Raingutter Regatta
  • Saturday November 11-Camp Drake Fall Service Day
  • Sunday December 3-Arrrow of Light and Crossover Ceremony
Please go to www.hcpack9.org and click on the calendar for additional details.

Also, attached is the Raingutter Regatta informational flyer and rules and regulations. Note: if you don't have a regatta kit yet please contact your den leader.

Finally, although medals, ribbons and prizes are given to the Raingutter Regatta participants, please remember that SPORTSMANSHIP and FUN are the main objectives for the Scouts and all to enjoy. The most important values in this competition are parent/son participation, good sportsmanship and learning how to follow rules.
Two things the Raingutter Regatta requires each participant to learn are 1) the craft skills necessary to build a boat and 2) the rules that must be followed.
Even more important, though, is how we act and behave while participating in the Raingutter Regatta or any other group activity. This is called sportsmanship.

The first thing to remember about sportsmanship is that everyone's skills are a little different. Your craft skills may be just developing, while someone else may be more experienced. Parents have different skill levels, too.
Whether or not you feel that you have good boat-building or racing skills, remind your scout that they and their friends are individuals first and racers second. This idea is often called having respect for others.

Yours in scouting,
John

Pack 9 Cub Scout October News

Well, Pack 9 cub scouts are back in the swing of things.  We have about 35 boys registered for 2017-18!  Den meetings, events and outings should be getting finalized now that the new scouts have joined the Pack!  A big welcome to all of the new families of Pack 9!!!!!
Please try to attend as many of the activities as possible, each one will provide a different opportunity to learn and grow as a scout.

Many thanks to those who helped make the rocket launch a success, especially the Troop 9 scouts who were on hand!

Popcorn sales are going, thanks for all the help at the Show and Sells!  We sold over $1,200 in popcorn sales last Friday in a three hour stay at the Urbana Walmart!  I hope that the door to door and online sales are going well too!

The Illini Camporee at Memorial Stadium is scheduled for October 14-15th and Pack 9 will be well represented at the event.

And, if you didn't attend the Cub Scout Fun Day in September, try to attend the Smilin' Pumpkin Sports Fest at Camp Drake.  The last weekend in October is typically one of the last good weekends of the year for decent camping weather…especially when cub scouts are involved.  There are still cabins and campsites available for rent the weekend of Oct. 27-29.
On Sunday the 29th, a fun day of outdoor games is planned (BB's, Archery, Fishing, and Sports) for current and potential cub scouts and families from 1:00-4:00pm.  Family participation is encouraged, so siblings can attend and participate.
Along with the Giant Launcher targeting the humongous pumpkins, rockets will be soaring through the skies at Camp Drake.  All new scouts are encouraged to bring their free rocket kits to the launch on the plateau.  Any current scouts can obtain a free rocket by recruiting a buddy to join their unit.  If needed, extra rocket kits and engines will be available for purchase at the Camp Drake trading post.  Plan now to blast-off at the Smilin' Pumpkin!

Please stay active with your scout:

  • attend the meetings and events
  • read the scout book at home
  • volunteer to assist at meetings and events
  • check out www.prairielandsbsa.org and sign up for their newsletter
  • check out www.hcpack9.org and follow the calendar
  • check out www.campdrake.com
  • like Camp Drake on Facebook to keep up with the goings on at camp
  • Do Your Best!

John Karduck

Boneyard Creek Community Day, April 29

This Saturday is one of Pack 9's signature service days: the Boneyard Creek Community Day. Check-in with event staff is at 9:00am at Kaufman Lake, and in recent years we've been done by 11:00am. No need to sign up your scout ahead of time. Come when you can; leave when you need to.

What to Wear?
Dress to work outside. No open-toed shoes. Scouts should wear either the yellow Pack 9 t-shirt or the orange Boneyard shirt from a previous year if you have one. Otherwise, event staff typically have more orange Boneyard shirts on-site for volunteers.

What about Rain?
The forecast for Saturday is for rain, and here's what BCCD staff told me.

For more information and potential weather related delays/cancellation please see our Facebook event page the morning of the clean-up.
Basically the event will occur rain or shine unless severe weather. Thunder and lightning will cause potential delays. If the event is canceled, it will be posted on the Facebook page. Due to the nature of the event, no rain date is scheduled.

Post Party
After the cleanup, there is a Thank You lunch and Educational Displays provided to volunteers in Scott Park beginning at 11:30am.

Any questions? Contact Dave Unger at davidunger3@gmail.com or visit the BCCD official page or Facebook page.
