October Newsletter

The October newsletter is here!  Read it while it is hot off the presses!  See the online version by clicking the link.

A TLDR version of the newsletter:
1. If you are attending the Illini Camporee (44 of us are!) make sure you know the how, where and whens of it all!  See Jacelyn's email or see the details linked in the newsletter.

2.  One of our Fall Service projects is volunteering for Making Strides Again Breast Cancer.  This event is Saturday 10/20.  Very few people have RSVPed for this event.  Please RSVP here.  Contact Dave Unger with any questions.

3.  Popcorn sales sheets and money are due to Mr. Karduck by Monday October 15th.

Hope to see all of you Saturday at the Camporee!

Summer Greetings & July Newsletter

Good Evening Pack 9!

We hope that everyone is having a great and exciting summer!  There has been lots of fun to be had at Day Camps and we hope all of our Adventure Campers are pumped up and ready for their turn.

We would like to thank each and every one of you for all of the time, talent, and effort that you have contributed to the Pack.  As we are settling into our new roles, we feel blessed to have so many knowledgeable leaders and helpful parents to support us.

I (Jim) would especially like to thank John Karduck for his selfless and relentless pursuit of excellence for Pack 9 during his tenure as Cubmaster.  He has left very large (and smelly) shoes to fill and I hope that I can continue to keep Pack 9 as fun loving, charitable, inquisitive and meaningful as it has been.

The July newsletter has lots of information regarding summer events as well as the 2018-2019 Pack event calendar, so take some time to read through it and mark your calendars. Please let us of us know if you have any questions.

We will be sending out more information soon!

Boneyard Creek Community Day -- April 7, 2018 -- Kaufman Lake

Saturday, April 7 is one of Pack 9's signature service days: the Boneyard Creek Community Day. Check-in with event staff is at 9:00am at Kaufman Lake. In recent years we've been done by 11:00am. No need to sign up your scout ahead of time. Come when you can; leave when you need to.

What to Wear?
Dress to work outside. No open-toed shoes. Scouts should wear either the yellow Pack 9 t-shirt or the orange Boneyard shirt from a previous year if you have one. Otherwise, event staff typically have more orange Boneyard shirts on-site for volunteers.

What about Rain?
For more information and potential weather related delays/cancellation please see the Facebook event page the morning of the clean-up. If the event is canceled, it will be posted on the Facebook page.

The rain date is scheduled for Saturday, April 21.

Post Party
Immediately after the cleanup, a free lunch for volunteers will be served at Scott Park, where there will be music and interactive learning displays. It usually starts between 11:30 and noon.

Any questions? Contact Dave Unger at davidunger3@gmail.com or visit the BCCD official page or Facebook event page.

Pack 9 News-March

Thanks to all of the volunteers who made the Blue and Gold celebration a hit!!

It's nearly time for the Pinewood Derby, one of the most exciting events of our Pack year. This year's Derby is Sunday, March 11, at 12:30 p.m. in Holy Cross School Gymnasium.

Our goal is to have everyone checked in and be ready to race by 1:15p.m. Please be on time and have your car substantially ready to compete! Voting on "Best In Show" will begin at 1:15p.m.

If you need assistance in building a car, please contact Cubmaster John Karduck at pack9cubmaster@gmail.com.

We compete under the Prairielands Council rules, which can be found here: http://prairielandsbsa.org/assets/files/2018%20Council%20Pinewood%20Derby%20Rules(1).pdf.

We also allow for siblings and parents to compete in our "Outlaws" division. This race is for all non-Cub scouts.  You must weigh in by 1:15p.m. You must purchase your own car, etc. BSA tires must be used. Cars may not be over 5.0 ounces.  No rockets, or anything that may produce fire or any other hazardous situations. No liquids. No CO2 cartridges or high pressure propellants allowed.  Any car deemed unsafe by the race committee will be asked to be removed immediately.  Safety is the first priority. The Outlaw race will start after the Cub Scouts races are done and while the results are being tabulated.

I'd really like to encourage parents and siblings to build cars for the Outlaw division so we can have a good field of vehicles!

We need some parental help to make the Derby a success. If you could volunteer your time and talent, our sons will have a memorable experience.

Thanks to those who have contacted John Farney already. He will be letting you know your job assignment before race day.

First, set up for Pinewood Derby will take place on Saturday, March 10, at 10 a.m. At this time we will set up the track, practice track, bleachers, and various stations. After we're done setting up, if your son's car is ready, he can test it on the practice track, so come help set up and take advantage of the opportunity for practice track time
as a reward!

On Sunday, we need helpers at the following stations:

Driver's License Station - at this station we take the Scout's photo with his car and the trophies, and create his driver's license souvenir. This is a great station for anyone who likes to do desktop publishing or design. 2 volunteers would be great.

Weigh-in/Qualification Station - at this station we weigh and measure the Scout's car to make sure it complies with the race rules. This is pretty straight forward. We provide the scales and a box that the car must fit in. 2 volunteers are needed.

Gasoline Alley - this is our repair station where Scouts can make last minute repairs or modifications if necessary to qualify. This is where boys add weight if needed, or sometimes drill holes to lessen weight, or even find some super glue to hold it all together! 2-3 volunteers who are handy would be great.

After the cars are qualified, they are isolated and no further work can be done on them. From this point forward, the boys don't touch the cars.

Finally, we'd love to have one person (perhaps a Lion or Tiger parent) to shadow John Farney and learn the software we use to run the races.

If you would like to help, please email John directly at pack9committee@gmail.com so he can get you set up!

February Pack 9 News

Hello Pack 9, attached is the latest edition of the Pack 9 News.

A hearty welcome goes out to Jackson G. and Elyais S. and their families as they've joined the Lions Den!

Please check out www.hcpack9.org for:
  • Calendar Information/Updates
  • Summer Camp Information
  • Info for New Families
  • Info for New Den Leaders
  • Pack 9 Leadership
  • Editions of Pack 9 News
  • Pack 9 Scout Leader Toolbox
  • Adult Training-Youth Protection
  • Scoutbook
And, don't forget to plan for summer camp!

Lastly, as my boys will be crossing over into Troop 9 in December…
I will again emphasize the need for individuals to step up to lead/volunteer at Pack 9 events and den meetings.  While most of what we as Pack 9 leaders do takes time, patience, organization and common sense, there are a lot of online resources to find your way.  In addition, Pack 9 will pay for the cost of BSA leadership training opportunities.

If you are interested, contact myself or Jim Linnenburger soon to get acquainted with planning for the 2018-19 calendar year.

Yours In Scouting,

John Karduck
