Pack 9 Cub Scouts
Introduction and FAQ
What is Cub Scouting?
How old must my child be to join Cub Scouts?
Boys and girls ages 5 through 10 (entering Kindergarten through 5th grade) are eligible to join Pack 9. Children 11 and older should consider Scouts BSA Troop 9.
How often do Cub Scouts meet?
The pack is divided into dens of children in a single grade level. Dens meet 2-3 times per month and most of the activities are done there. Each month, the pack has its own joint meeting with a special event or common activity.
How much does it cost?
Scouting America, the national organization, charges an $85 annual fee for all youth, as well as a one-time $25 processing fee for new members. Beyond that, Pack 9 itself does not charge separate dues, and meets all other costs by fundraising; specifically, our fall popcorn sales.
*Pack 9 will ensure that all children who want to be a part of Scouting will be Cub Scouts, regardless of personal finances.* Please email pack9cubmaster@gmail.com if your family needs financial assistance.
Are there any other costs?
Uniform: Pack 9 provides Scouts with a branded T-shirt and the official uniform neckerchief for their grade level. Scouts in 1st through 5th grades must purchase the appropriate uniform shirt and starter patches from the Scout Shop. A shopping list with prices is available from the Cubmaster, and from time to time we may have used shirts from former Scout families.
Summer Camp and Excursions: Our local Scouting council owns Camp Robert Drake near Oakwood, IL, and charges a fee to attend summer camp there. Scouts may apply a portion of the money they raise through popcorn sales as a credit against their camp fees. Also, on rare occasions the pack may offer an opportunity to go on trips or excursions which would have an additional fee.
*As with the membership fee, Pack 9 will ensure that Scouts who want to go to Summer Camp will receive financial asssistance to do so.*
Who are the leaders?
Cub Scouting is volunteer-led, and the leaders are almost exclusively moms, dads, and grandparents of the Cub Scouts. Some leaders were Scouts in their youth, but many of us were not; nonetheless, we're all working together to make the program happen.
Do I have to attend with my child?
Lions and Tigers (Kindergarten and 1st grade) are required to attend every meeting with a parent or guardian. Wolves and up (2nd-5th grade) do not require a parent to attend, but Pack 9 always welcomes and encourages parent participation. Cub Scouting is a family adventure.
